Theresa Southam

Writer, Social Change Maker

Theresa Southam (nee Lowe) attended David Thompson University Centre where she studied poetry and fine woodworking. Although she has maintained a private poetry writing practice, she took a long arc towards non-fiction writing as she coordinated the building of major nature/culture centres in British Columbia and the high arctic. She used her writing skills for conserving wetlands (Wetlandkeepers Handbook) and salmon (Stream to Sea).

As she moves into her third age, Theresa has begun publishing about gratitude and resistance, first as a co-editor of Driving Social Innovation: How Unexpected Leadership is Transforming Society and then as author of Transforming Trauma through Social Change: A Guide for Educators. In Transforming Trauma each chapter features a character, including some from the region in which the Narrows is situated. Pick up the book and you’ll discover how Sinixt leader Virgil Seymour, conservationist Briony Penn,  back-to-the landers from the Slocan Valley, international student Gagnjeet Singh, and community organizer Lee Reid have moved through trauma with gratitude. The lessons they learn drive them to instigate major social change.

At the Narrows she continued working on her new book, collaged about her dreams, and even wrote a little poetry.https://www.southam.space/
