The Narrows remote studio
Winter at the residency

Everybody needs beauty as well as bread, places to play in and pray in, where nature may heal and give strength to body and soul.

~John Muir

The Residency Program is intended to give artists an opportunity to imagine and create in an inspirational, contemplative and remote setting.

Located near Kootenay Lake, the Retreat centre is nestled among cottonwood, cedar trees and ponderosa pines. Away from the distractions of daily life, a residency allows one the time to renew and focus on their creative practice and experience a sense of tranquility. People looking to escape must consider whether or not this is the right environment for them. Transport to and from the retreat is by motor boat. One trip per week by boat can be made available if necessary, for groceries and re-supply, free of charge.

Artist-in-Residence Program:

The Artist is responsible for lodging, travel expenses, food, art materials, shipping, and other personal expenses.

* Most participants apply for grants to institutions, government agencies, foundations, universities, etc. in their country/province of origin to assist with funding during their stay.  We also have a scholarship program, please see below.

We do not provide daily cleaning of the studio or rooms, or daily meals. Residents are expected to maintain their studio space and rooms, shared common areas of the kitchen, bathroom and other common areas in a clean and tidy manner, with respect for the other residents using the space.

We provide shared, or private accommodation. The Narrows can accommodate up to *3 residents at a time, from different disciplines and stages in their careers, to live and work. Artists in residence have access to our shared residence, professional studio, and the yurt.

* Shared residency: the number of resident artists may vary depending on their discipline. Even though the retreat sleeps 6-8, we limit the maximum number of artists sharing for a residency to 3.

All prices are listed in Canadian dollars (CAD).

Do you need financial assistance? The Narrows Artist Residency Program is excited to offer partial scholarships to participate in a residency.
