The NARROWS Art Retreat
Sarah Hollands works in painting, drawing, and photography. Her practice is currently focused on large-scale oil paintings on raw canvas and board, as well as developing hand-rendered inks from foraged materials local to the landscapes she depicts.
A long-running theme in her paintings involves reconciling life and beauty with death, rot, and food — exploring the interconnected relationship between the fecund and the decayed. She finds beauty and mystery in both, and through her work seeks to understand the transitional element that bonds them — the see-saw of attraction and repulsion when examining life, end of life, and decay in the natural world.
During her residency, her daughter, Balam accompanied her. They work side by side in their home studio on a daily basis, and her daughter is currently building a portfolio in preparation for applying to an arts-immersive high school program.
We were thrilled to welcome this mother–daughter duo to The Narrows and are excited to follow Sarah’s continued artistic practice.
